Final Fantasy VII Remake - Limit Break Guide

Here's how to unlock all Limit Breaks.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a faithful reinterpretation of the old title for many of its features, and one of these is undoubtedly the return of the Limit Break, the finishing moves that allow you to inflict huge amounts of damage in battle.

Just like in the original, there are different levels of Limit Break, although in this remake there are only two levels and two Limit Breaks for each character. The first is available for every character from the start, while the second can be unlocked via side missions.

Put simply, Cloud, Tifa and Barret's Limit Breaks work the same way: the former inflicts a lot of damage, while the latter increases the effectiveness of the stun, which allows you to inflict a greater amount of damage to enemies. Aerith's two, on the other hand, are related to healing and undoing damage. In order to unlock the second Limit Breaks, you will need to get the necessary item through the optional Arena battles.

To be honest, however, there is also a third Limit Break for each character named Refocus. This is accessible only through the use of Matter. Given the nature of this guide, be aware that it contains spoilers.

How to change Limit Breaks in the game

Once your second is unlocked Limit Break, you will need to equip it in order to use it. Remember, however, that you will not be able to access both Limit Break at the same time, therefore you will have to choose the one that can be most useful to you.

To make this choice, open the game menu and, in the equipment and weapon upgrade options, you can swap them.

In case you have equipped the matter Refocus, once the Limit bar is filled, you can choose between your two Limit Break e Refocus.

Limit Break by Cloud Strife

Limit Break Level 1 - Cross-Slash 

• Damage the enemy while crafting a creepy symbol with blade slashes.
• Unlock Method: Cloud has this Limit from the beginning.

Limit Break Level 2 - Ascension

• A completely new move that focuses a series of powerful blows on a single enemy. This move significantly increases stun.
• Unlock Method: You will receive the “Legacy: Ascension” manuscript as a reward for the “Cloud vs. Wild Animals ”in the Corneo Arena, available after Chapter 9.

Limit Break alternative - Refocus

• Refocus allows you to use the Limit Break to split the ATB bar, allowing the use of three ATB actions at the same time instead of two.
• Unlock Method: Refocus is accessible by equipping the Materia of the same name and can be used by any character. It can be equipped at the same time as others Limit Break; when you use yours Limit, you will be given the option to choose which one to use.

Limit Break by Barret Wallace

Level 1 Limit Break - Fire in the Hole

• Shoot an energy ball that creates a large explosion, dealing massive damage.
• Unlock Method: Barret has this Limit from the beginning.

Level 2 Limit Break - Catastrophe

• Concentrate and channel your forces into a concentrated beam of energy. Significantly increases stun.
• Unlock Method: You will receive the “Legacy: Catastrophe” Manuscript Item as a reward for completing the “Barret vs. Wild Animals ”in the Arena of Corneo, available after Chapter 9. You will be able to visit the Arena again with Barret in Chapter 14.

Limit Break alternative - Refocus

• Refocus allows you to use the Limit Break to split the ATB bar, allowing the use of three ATB actions at the same time instead of two.
• Unlock Method: Refocus is accessible by equipping the Materia of the same name and can be used by any character. It can be equipped at the same time as others Limit Break; when you use yours Limit, you will be given the option to choose which one to use.

Limit Break by Tifa Lockhart

Level 1 Limit Break - Somersault

• Damage an enemy and throw them into the air with a Zangan-style quick kick.
• Unlock Method: Tifa has this Limit from the beginning.

Level 2 Limit Break - Dolphin Flurry

• Unleash a flurry of acrobatic attacks. Significantly increases stun.
• Unlock Method: You will receive the “Legacy: Dolphin Flurry” item after completing the “Tifa vs. Wild Animals ”in the Arena di Corneo, unlocked after Chapter 9. You will be able to visit the Arena again with Tifa in Chapter 14.
