Originally released on Xbox One and PC, Cuphead seems to fit really well on Nintendo Switch.
Among the most successful indie games of recent years, we find Cuphead, a 2D horizontally scrolling platformer, with an excellent graphic style and from difficult gameplay but at the same time really rewarding.
The game was exclusive PC e Xbox One for about a year and a half. Understandable, given that Microsoft products has contributed significantly to leading the independent firm MDHR in the spotlight. Surprisingly, however, a few months ago, the announcement that made all Nintendo Switch owners roll their eyes, Cuphead would also arrive on the hybrid of the Kyoto house.
Would the refined and unique artistic style have the same visual impact even on a less powerful console? Would the Switch have been able to properly handle the display and execution of the game in portable mode? We can answer both questions with a firm yes. Nintendo Switch is the perfect platform to better enjoy the experience offered by Cuphead.
The best port ever released on Nintendo Switch!
Probably, to date, is the best port ever released on Switch. It is still an indie-scale platformer, but the complexity of its aesthetics and the frenetic gameplay were certainly not two easy elements to manage on the Nintendo console. Still, the work done by the studio has been nothing short of remarkable. Cuphead never wavered when running, either in docked mode, at a resolution 1080p / 60fps and both in the portable one, resolution reduced to 720p.
Initially, the fact that in portable mode the resolution was considerably lower, gave us more than a few concerns, especially in terms of graphics and aesthetics in general. However, this was not a problem. The bright cartoon aesthetic of the 20s is not affected at all on the small console screen turning out to be as accurate as it is wonderful to look at just like on PC or Xbox One.
Overall, Cuphead's build is perfect for the Switch. Joy-Con allow for excellent cooperation, although we would have expected more use of the feature HD Rumble. The tiered structure fits very well on a portable console. Furthermore, on Nintendo Switch the animations have been further improved (especially those of the bosses, which appear to be more varied), and new ones have been added, thanks to the latest software update released today.
New animations!
The update also allows players to choose Mugman right from the start in single player mode, to benefit from small changes such as some bug fixes and to be able to select eleven new language locales, which will only expand the appeal of the game and make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone .
Who writes to you, had already appreciated Cuphead in Xbox One and PC versions, but on Nintendo Switch the MDHR masterpiece is a real gem. If, for some reason, you haven't played Cuphead, and you are a fan of animation or retro-style platformers, do it now, as it is a must-buy to have absolutely on Nintendo Switch.
Even at a slightly lower resolution in handheld mode, Cuphead really feels at home on Nintendo's hybrid console. The porting work is almost flawless and its structure gracefully transforms into a portable experience. Meanwhile, thanks to new animations, bug fixes and the ability to play as Mugman right away, the most recent update helps make Cuphead better than ever.
