Losing your car keys can happen to anyone and while it's clearly a problem, you don't necessarily need to panic. Certainly the most practical solution to solve this problem is to have an identification code of the lost key. This article will clarify the reasons why it is advisable to have such a code in a clear and concise manner, also explaining how it is possible to program the key of your car.
In the event of loss of a coded key, the most important thing is to have the identification code, which clearly varies from car to car. Through this code an authorized locksmith will be able to produce a new key, equal to the lost one, by loading the aforementioned code. In this case, reprogramming of the car ECU will not be necessary. Unfortunately, things don't always go the right way and for many models, especially those from FIAT, it is necessary to purchase a new coded key: an expense which is best avoided.
Programming
In general terms, however, programming can be done by following the steps below.
- Sit comfortably on the driver's seat, from which you have access to the ignition lock to connect the key to the car system.
- Insert the key into the ignition lock, holding it still for a moment. In this phase it is advisable to keep the other keys to be programmed close at hand, so as not to waste time.
- Switch the car on and off by turning the key to the "on" position, without however starting the engine. Indeed, in this case, simply activating the electrical system is sufficient. Then return the key to its initial position, turning off the machine.
- Repeat the operation with the second active key of the car. Overall you have about only five seconds to remove the first car and insert the second in the ignition. Also in this case it will be sufficient just to start the electrical system, without starting the engine.
- Once this operation has been completed with the second key, you will have approximately ten seconds to insert the third key to be programmed. This key, like the previous ones, will also be used to start the electrical system and after a second it must be returned to its initial position, without however removing it.
- Wait for the safety light to come on, paying attention to the dashboard. Once it has come on, in some cases it will be necessary to press the buttons on the surface of the key to be programmed. Once this has also been done, the new key will be extracted and, after a few minutes, it will be possible to test whether the new key has been successfully programmed.
Key replacement
If you want to completely replace the old key with a new one, you must first of all purchase an unprogrammed, "virgin" key of the same make as the car or in any case of a compatible model. In the case of the latest generation cars, this operation, as previously mentioned, is most often not possible and it is necessary to contact a qualified locksmith or an authorized dealer. Both can in fact be of help even if the key programming code has been lost or simply forgotten. It should also be remembered that this code, the so-called VIN code, is usually found on the vehicle registration document and on the insurance policy. In any case, both from the dealer and from the locksmith, for legal issues it is always necessary to show a valid document of ownership in order to request a duplicate.
Car remote control
Together with the key it is also possible to program the remote control of the car. Also in this case it is necessary to bear in mind that the programming methods may vary according to the car model, for this reason it is always advisable to first take a look at the car's user manual or alternatively also at the car manufacturer's website . In general, this is the procedure to follow.
- Sit in the driver's seat, with the key and remote control in hand. Then insert the key in the block and turn it to the "on" position, in order to switch on the electrical system, however preventing the engine from starting. During this operation all the car doors must remain closed.
- Press the lock button on the remote control, making sure to direct the remote control towards the receiver, usually located in the front part of the vehicle. Once this is done, press the door lock button a couple of seconds later.
- Return the key to the OFF position, thus disabling the electrical system. All this is done in a matter of seconds.
- The procedure will be repeated with all the other remote controls to be programmed. Once programming is complete, you will need to test that the remote control works.
