The return we've been waiting for.

Until last 27 October, day in which Assassin's Creed officially made its return to store shelves (and digital ones) we were still very afraid for the fate of the saga. The inspiration in terms of plot and gameplay had in fact been fading, slowly but without a doubt: they had remained, in Unity and in Syndicate, only beautiful places to visit, but which were immediately lost in the repetitiveness of a thousand identical things.

Not that in the past the repetitiveness had not been the Achilles heel of the series anyway: but at least in Ezio's time there was the pure interest of knowing where the events told would go, as well as the parallelism with the present day with the co -protagonist Desmond. Assassin's Creed Origins is a true return to origins, of those that the saga needed, managing to recover all the old strengths of the franchise and going to remedy where it was weaker.

Of course, some slips here and there persist, but finally it is offered at the usual price a complete triple A title, long-lived, fun and solid. After more than 40 hours spent in the desert among mirages and marauders, Ptolemaic and Roman, we are ready for our verdict - which we anticipate, and you will have understood it, is definitely positive.

The guardian of Ancient Egypt

At the time of Assassin's Creed Origins the assassins as we know them have not yet been born: the closest thing to the key hero of the saga is represented by the medjay, a sort of Pharaoh's spiritual guard who is concerned with helping the weak, saving the unfortunate on duty from the abuses of the powerful, and other noble enterprises. The problem is that Origins is set at the end of the first century a. C., he lovers of history will know that at the time it is not that Egypt was so well placed at the dynastic level. The internal war between the Ptolemaic families was in progress and the time of the great Pharaohs and solar rulers was only a distant memory.

I medjay they are themselves only a memory: Bayek, the protagonist of the title, is the last of their lineage, and animated by an iron will to help others wherever possible, he will do everything to lend a hand to the needy in this kneeling Egypt. A land where (and here the real plot comes in) also begin to act those who one day will be called with the name of Templars. Simply referred to as "members of the Order", these shady characters find an object of Eden and begin to wreak havoc everywhere by setting up their games of power and abuse, even hitting Bayek's family (we don't want to tell you anything else).

Thus begins the journey of our first real murderer ever, which will take him gradually to get closer and closer to the Creed, together with his partner Aya, to take two completely different directions. Long-lived and interesting, lasting at least 30 hours, the Assassin's Creed Origins storyline is the most successful from the time of that of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and openly refers to that of the first Assassin's Creed by Altair, trying to motivate and vary the thousand kills that we will be led to carry out. The underlying repetitiveness is diluted in a mammoth and varied game environment, which rarely makes it feel heavy. And for the first time it can finally be tackled by choosing between three different difficulty levels.

Completely revamped gameplay

The steps forward made in the game direction are not the only novelty of Assassin's Creed Origins: the fan of the saga at the first impact will find himself completely displaced, grappling with a completely revamped combat system. This is the upgrade and a series of improvements that have been long overdue, and the uncertainty will only last a matter of minutes.

First of all, artificial intelligence has now become worthy of the name: enemies will attack you together, not one at a time, and their power will vary according to the level and hierarchy in the ranks of the Ptolemaics and Romans. As for the mere combat system, Bayek has a light attack (R1), a heavy attack (R2) and a myriad of combos which can be carried out by multiplying and variously combining the two types of attack. With L1, on the other hand, you grab the shield and defend yourself from enemies, and with Square you make a slide / sprint to avoid blows along one of the four possible directions.

If it seems little to you, wait until you see the rest. A gigantic skill tree, intuitive, practical and all in all economical, allows us to enhance our medjay depending on whether we prefer a more stealthy or a violent approach to the title. The protagonist's style of play will therefore be able to take advantage of a variety never seen before, by spending the skill points acquired by leveling up (you can go up to infinity, but the level cap is fixed at 40 for now) or by discovering the Hermitages scattered throughout the 'Egypt (one skill point awarded by discovering each of them).

Still not enough? The drift of Assassin's Creed Origins is that of an RPG, but seasoned with the action / stealth base of the series. This means that we will now have weapons on weapons, clothes, various equipment, even customizations of the mounts, all of which can be purchased or found via loot in the various game areas, at the camps of the bandits or at the treasure caves in the desert. Kind of like The Witcher 3, but more like Assassin's Creed.

Senu, the first of the Eagles

If you remember the drone to use in Watchdogs 2 to take a look at the environments in which we should have introduced ourselves shortly thereafter, know that in Assassin's Creed Origins we will do more or less the same thing. No, this time we will not use the eye of the eagle, the famous inner power / perception of the killers. This time we will use a REAL eagle. Which is called Senu.

Another mechanic that must be properly mastered and that at the beginning will leave the newbies completely displaced, the flight of Senu allows us to study the surrounding environments in his interest gthanks to a useful glance from above. As well as to mark interesting points on the game map, soldiers carrying precious goods (and useful for upgrades), wild animals to hunt and so on. By upgrading it through the skill tree, Senu will also be able to hunt weaker animals without our help, or run to our rescue by distracting the soldiers during clashes.

A couple of cartridges remain at Assassin's Creed Origins in the inspired soundtrack and in an exceptional technical, graphic and artistic sector. Regardless of the fact that visually the latest installment of the franchise is simply impressive in its explosion of colors due to a setting that we believe is very inspired, there is not only this. The care in the historical reconstruction, in painting those environments in that particular period of their history, the cities, even the suburbs of the poor and the desert dunes: all this, in its accuracy, is 10 e Lode. Nobody can beat Ubisoft in studying the territory and reproducing ancient worlds in a video game. At the moment, simply none.
